       The Estrela mountain range (Serra da Estrela), about 120 kilometers (75 miles) long, in the Beira Alta district of north-central Portugal, boasts the highest peaks in the country. The highest point is about 1,992 meters (6,532 feet). Frequently seen from neighboring areas, the snowcapped peaks of the Estrela ("star" in Portuguese) mountains feature Portugal's only winter downhill skiing facilities.
